James Turner Swanson firmly believed in the quality of a proper education. Times were very different when he was a young man. At age 16 he started high school and graduated at age 26. To support himself during those years he taught school as he did for many years after. At the age of 43 he entered college as a freshman, later completing his studies for a bachelor's degree.
Each year the family contributes to the James Turner Swanson Scholarship Fund, through cash donations, the annual reunion meal and auction.
